Scams

Here are some tips to avoid becoming a victim of cyber fraud:

• Do not respond to text messages or automated voice messages from unknown or blocked numbers on your mobile phone.
• Treat your mobile phone like you would your computer. Do not download anything unless you trust the source.
• Contact your financial institution using the official website or phone number located on the back of your bank card or statement.
• Please be vigilant about guarding your personal information. Remember scams may come in the form of emails, text messages, phone calls, mail, or even in-person.
• Do not give money or information to someone you do not know and do not return phone calls when a voicemail message has been left by someone unknown to you.
• A legitimate agency will not ask you for your social security number, computer password, credit card account number, bank PIN number, or any other confidential personal identifying information.
• Even if the caller sounds very official (from the IRS, a bank, the Department of Legal Affairs, the U.S. Treasury Department, or another government agency), if you suspect that they are attempting to scam you, ask for their name and telephone number (or if you think you have been the victim of a scam), and report it to the Bloomfield Police Department as soon as possible at 860-242-5501.
