GIFT CARD SCAMS
Beware of the many current frauds involving gift cards. No reputable company, nor the IRS (or any government agency), will ever demand payment via gift cards. When purchasing a gift card, try to choose one from the middle of the card rack or from a less-frequented area of the store. It is probably a scam if someone asks to listen to your balance inquiry phone call or wants to look over your shoulder while you enter the gift card numbers.
Other reasons to suspect fraudulent activity may include the following: if anyone tries to convince you to purchase a particular gift card; if an employee acts distracted or tries to distract you during gift card activation; or if the gift card number does not match the number on the activation receipt. If you suspect that you have been the victim of one of these schemes, do not hesitate to contact the Police Department.
